Residential Switchboard Upgrades for Melbourne Homes

Replace an ageing fuse box and improve your home’s electrical protection with a modern switchboard designed for today’s household requirements. Coop Group provides residential switchboard inspections, upgrades, testing and certification across Melbourne’s eastern and south-eastern suburbs.

A Safer, More Capable Switchboard for Your Home

Your switchboard is the central point that distributes electricity to the different lighting, power and appliance circuits throughout your property. It also contains the protective devices responsible for disconnecting power when certain electrical faults occur.

Older switchboards may still contain ceramic fuses, limited circuit protection or insufficient space for additional electrical equipment. They may also have been designed before modern homes began using multiple air conditioners, induction cooktops, solar systems, large appliances and other high-demand equipment.

Coop Group can inspect your existing switchboard, identify its current condition and explain whether repairs, additional protection or a complete upgrade would be appropriate.

Every recommendation is based on the existing electrical installation, the circuits within the property and any future electrical work you are planning.

What Is Included in a Residential Switchboard Upgrade?

A switchboard upgrade involves more than replacing the front panel. Our electrician assesses the existing installation, determines which components require replacement and plans the upgrade around the circuits and electrical requirements of your home.

The exact scope will depend on the age and condition of the existing switchboard, the available electrical supply, the number of circuits and any faults identified during inspection.

Existing Switchboard Inspection

Inspect the switchboard, protective devices, circuit arrangement and visible condition of the existing electrical installation.

Ceramic Fuse Replacement

Replace suitable rewireable ceramic fuses with modern protective devices selected for the individual electrical circuits.

Circuit Breaker Upgrades

Install circuit breakers designed to protect electrical wiring against overloads and short circuits.

Safety Switch Protection

Install suitable safety-switch protection for the circuits included within the approved switchboard upgrade.

New Switchboard Enclosure

Replace an ageing or unsuitable enclosure with a properly arranged switchboard capable of housing the required electrical equipment.

Circuit Testing & Labelling

Test the affected circuits and provide clear switchboard labelling so individual circuits can be identified more easily.

Capacity for Future Circuits

Consider suitable space for planned additions such as air conditioning, kitchen appliances, solar equipment or EV charging.

Electrical Fault Identification

Identify faults or installation concerns discovered during testing and explain any additional work required before completion.

What Our Switchboard Upgrade Process Looks Like

1. Switchboard Assessment

Our electrician inspects the existing switchboard, protective devices, circuit arrangement and any electrical concerns you have noticed.

2. Upgrade Plan & Quote

We explain the recommended upgrade, the equipment involved, any additional work identified and the expected interruption to your electricity supply.

3. Professional Installation

The electricity supply is safely isolated before the approved switchboard components, enclosure and protective devices are installed.

4. Testing, Certification & Handover

The completed work is tested, circuits are labelled and the applicable electrical safety documentation is provided. Where prescribed electrical work is involved, the relevant inspection requirements also apply.

FAQ

What does a residential switchboard do?

A residential switchboard receives electricity from the incoming supply and distributes it across the individual lighting, powerpoint and appliance circuits in your home. It also houses protective equipment such as circuit breakers and safety switches.

How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?

Your switchboard may require assessment if it still contains ceramic fuses, has limited safety-switch protection, shows signs of heat or damage, lacks space for additional circuits or regularly experiences unexplained tripping. An electrician must inspect the installation before confirming whether a complete upgrade is required.

Do ceramic fuses automatically mean I need a new switchboard?

Not necessarily. The condition of the enclosure, wiring, circuit protection and overall installation must be assessed. However, a switchboard containing ceramic rewireable fuses is a strong reason to arrange a professional inspection.

What is the difference between a circuit breaker and a safety switch?

Circuit breakers and fuses primarily protect wiring against excessive current, short circuits and overloads. Safety switches monitor current flow and disconnect electricity when they detect certain leakage faults that may present a personal safety risk.

Will my electricity be disconnected during the upgrade?

Yes. The electricity supply must be isolated while switchboard work is being completed. We will explain the likely outage period before beginning the upgrade so you can prepare.

Will upgrading the switchboard stop my power from tripping?

An upgrade may resolve tripping caused by faulty or unsuitable protective equipment, but tripping can also be caused by damaged wiring, overloaded circuits or faulty appliances. Testing is required to identify the actual cause.

Energy Safe Victoria recommends contacting a licensed electrician when fuses repeatedly blow or circuit breakers and safety switches continue switching off.

Can the upgrade prepare my home for solar or an EV charger?

The switchboard can be assessed with planned equipment such as solar, battery storage, air conditioning or EV charging in mind. However, additional circuits, supply upgrades or other electrical work may still be required depending on the installation.

Are safety switches required on every circuit?

The protection required depends on the type of property, the existing installation and the electrical work being completed. Our electrician will assess the circuits and explain what protection must be included within the proposed scope.

For Victorian rental properties, switchboard-type circuit breakers and RCDs are required to protect socket-outlet and lighting circuits under the applicable rental safety requirements.

Will I receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety?

Yes. Electrical installation work must be documented through the applicable Certificate of Electrical Safety. Where the work is classified as prescribed electrical installation work, inspection requirements may also apply.

Can I replace switchboard components myself?

No. Switchboard installation, alteration and repair work must be completed by an appropriately licensed electrical professional. Switchboards can remain live in areas even when individual circuit breakers have been turned off, making unauthorised work extremely dangerous.

Which areas do you service?

Coop Group is based in Bayswater and services Melbourne’s eastern and south-eastern suburbs, including Lilydale, Croydon, Ringwood, Warranwood, Eltham, Berwick and surrounding areas.
